The Power of Creativity

Written By: Emmy Smith

I have never been one to consider myself “creative”.

Even after 4 years of high school art classes, I can barely draw more than a stick figure. Music, writing, dancing, acting, and other things people traditionally consider as creative are things that I simply do not have a natural talent for. As a result, for years I have been telling myself I’m just not a creative person. So that was my mindset when quarantine started.

The beginning of quarantine was full of online classes and Netflix and it didn’t take long before I started feeling really down about my circumstances. I wanted to hang out with friends and go do fun things. My mom quickly noticed how I was feeling and suggested that I do something creative. My grandmother is really good at making quilts and so my mom suggested that we all work together on a big quilt. It was something I had never done before and I wasn’t sure at first if I would enjoy it. However, it quickly became one of my favorite quarantine activities. It has been so fulfilling and fun to create something instead of spending all day consuming various media.

It reminded me of a quote by Elder Utchdorf.

“Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty . . . The more you trust and rely on the Spirit, the greater your capacity to create. That is your opportunity in this life and your destiny in the life to come.” -Dieter F. Utchdorf, “Happiness, Your Heritage” Nov. 2008 general conference

I have felt the spirit more as I have found even small ways to be creative. So I invite you to go out and find ways to be creative! Whether it is an area where you have years of experience and talent, or something you’ve never tried before, now is the perfect opportunity to do something creative.

We have created a fun way to jot down your ideas below. Click on the PDF button beneath the picture to download and print it out! Have fun getting creative!!
