The Magical Skill You Can Learn in Times of Crisis

In my entire life, I have never experienced a mandated “social distancing.” It has been so interesting to walk the isles of Costco with no toilet paper to be found and to have had to become super creative with a lot of spare time hanging out in my house. We are certainly in strange times. However, I am an incurable optimist and I am so grateful that I have the gift of being able to find positive things even when it feels dark. I do believe that in a time like this, there is an opportunity. I believe there is one magical skill that really can only be learned during challenges. That skill is resilience. The reason why this skill is relevant to you is because if you have a resilient attitude and the strength to pick yourself up even when it’s hard, it has been proven to help you be happier in your life, and it also makes you more attractive to other people... including the fellas. Think about it. Let’s imagine that you are out to dinner with a really handsome gentleman. Let’s pretend that you are having an amazing conversation and having a lot of fun, and then you accidentally spill your water on him. Would you rather hang out with a guy who responds to something like that with laughter and an attitude of, “no worries, if you wanted to go swimming, you could’ve just said so. Or “How could you be so clumsy? You ruined my suit!” Of course the first response is much more attractive! That’s resilience. Someone who can take a really hard situation and roll with it, be flexible, rise above it, choose a good attitude even when it’s hard, and someone who can even find joy during the challenge! Which person do YOU want to be? Right now, our whole country and world is experiencing some thing really really hard. It’s OK to be scared, it’s OK to be frustrated, it’s OK to be sad. You get to feel whatever you want to feel. My challenge for you is to push yourself to find joy even when you don’t feel like it. Create some fun, even when you don’t feel like it. Try to lift others up who might be having a hard time, even when you are having a hard time yourself. Try to continue working on your education when you’re stuck in your house for a quarantine...even when you don’t feel like it. Continue to eat healthy and exercise, even when you don’t feel like it. That’s how we build resilience like a muscle.

When you do hard things, you get stronger. When we go to the gym and we exercise our biceps, the stress on the muscle is the exact thing that makes it stronger. It’s a good thing to push ourselves- especially in times like these. We need people who can be resilient to help the people who can’t be. We need people who can serve, to help those who are helpless. You could quite possibly be someone’s guardian angel during this hard time. You don’t have to be strong all the time. It’s OK to cry or scream or feel whatever you want to feel, but give yourself a simple challenge to do one hard thing every day so that you can build this magical skill and get through this challenge having become stronger! Resilience is a magical skill that helps you and helps others love being around you!
